Reasons to love Christmas
Why do you love the holidays?
Christmas is easily my favourite holiday. Each year, as the scent of pumpkin-spiced everything begins to fill the air, my eager mind becomes consumed with thoughts and plans for the upcoming celebrations. By the evening of October thirty-first, I was ready to commence the extreme holiday makeover of my house, until I was abruptly stopped by my mother who kindly reminded me that it was still Halloween, and trick-or-treaters would soon be arriving.
Earlier this week, I was asked why I love Christmas so much. Despite my obvious passion, it was difficult for me to pinpoint an exact reason. While holiday movies, gift giving, and Michael Bublé’s Christmas album are all respectable answers, I could not come to accept any one of these traditions as the answer. It wasn’t until later, when I was examining the calendar, checking off the assignments I’ve done, and the exams that I have yet to do, I realized why I love the holidays - and it was not all that complex.
Life, as we all know, can be extremely overwhelming at times. It is easy to perceive every impending week as a long to-do list. In the words of Ferris Bueller, “life moves pretty fast”. But in the few days leading up to Christmas, things have a way of slowing down. It sometimes feels as though the world comes to a brief pause, and for a moment the pressures of everyday life seems to fade... These days exist to bring joy, peace, and ultimately, love. And now, as I sit here writing about the holidays and counting down the days until my last exam, I can feel my excitement increasing. Yes, I am stressed for the time being, but I’m wearing a Christmas sweater. All in all, it's a wonderful life.
